The movie genre Kristen Stewart turned against: “Sounds like a fucking nightmare”
Kristen Stewart isn’t exactly known for her stint in the action world.
Believe you me, she’s tried it: in the 2020 sci-fi horror film Underwater, she’s seen battling deep-sea ocean creatures in a high-energy fight for survival. In the 2019 reboot of Charlie’s Angels, Stewart plays the wild, rebellious Sabina Wilson, all muscle and raw energy, ready to left hook any opponent on a moment’s notice.
As a testament to her acting abilities, the more a movie leans towards the action realm, the less the general public seems to believe in Stewart, and instead, her performance in slower, more introspective pieces, such as the 2021 Princess Diana movie, Spencer, earned her greater recognition. In that case, imitating the late beloved princess led directly to an Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Actress’.
So, it’s no surprise that the Twilight breakout star leans more towards the high-brow on the cinematic side of things. But, ever the open-minded creative, she was willing to show fans and critics alike that the mumbling, morose Stewart special wasn’t all that she was capable of. Gesturing to the Marvel and the DC side of the industry, the actor shared, “I love watching those movies,” with Yahoo Movies.
“I would love to show people that I can do more than just be ‘Kristen Stewart’ in a different movie, in a different circumstance.”
After insisting that her titular role as a spunky Snow White in the big-budget fantasy adventure Snow White and the Huntsman might just be the start of the path towards a superhero stint, she added, “I’m sure I could get on board with Captain America, you know what I mean? It would just have to be the right thing.”
Almost a decade later, in a career full of ups and downs in the cutthroat industry, Stewart has turned her back on the garish world of fast-food cinema entirely. The first clue was when the star began stepping away from big-budget Hollywood productions, with the A24 romantic thriller, Love Lies Bleeding, encapsulating her move towards the zany, zesty, and unorthodox.
Her general anti-establishment ethos might make it clear to anyone with eyes, but Stewart made her stance on Marvel crystal clear when appearing on the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, explaining, “I will likely never do a Marvel movie…it sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually”.
Despite her naive previous comments, Stewart refuses any involvement until the system undergoes a huge overhaul, noting, “You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person…and it doesn’t happen. And so, therefore, what ends up happening is this algorithmic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it.”
By this logic, the only way to get Stewart in a cape and face paint would be based on the director. Stewart, aware of this, added with a smile, “How could I tell you no when maybe one day…if Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it”. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for the day Gerwig and Marvel see eye-to-eye.
