Kristen Stewart reveals why she’ll never work with Marvel

Actor Kristen Stewart has explained why she couldn’t imagine herself becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, labelling it “algorithmic”.

Stewart, who stars in the new romantic thriller Love Lies Bleeding, released on March 8th, has taken a step away from big-budget Hollywood productions in recent years, preferring to undertake left-field projects. Therefore, considering her recent choice of film, Stewart’s reluctance to become a superhero isn’t greatly surprising.

While she made her name in the The Twilight Saga, and also starred in Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012, Stewart sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a step too far, especially at this experimental stage of her career.

During a new appearance on the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, Stewart explained: “I will likely never do a Marvel movie … it sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually.”

The Charlie’s Angels star did caveat her comments by saying that she enjoys being part of “big movies because I like people to watch them when I’m in them.”

After Not Skinny but Not Fat host Amanda Hirsch speculated that Stewart would have been a perfect fit for Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man franchise, the actor disagreed, claiming, “the system would have to change” in order for her to sign up for a Marvel movie.

Elaborating on her issues with big studio productions, Stewart noted: “You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person … and it doesn’t happen. And so therefore what ends up happening is this algorithmic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it.”

She continued: “So likely not. But maybe the world changes, that’s what I’m saying. How could I tell you no when maybe one day … if Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it.”

Another issue that actors face when stepping inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the demanding re-shoots, and in some cases, it can take longer than the original filming period.

British icon Ray Winstone recently recalled his shared his involvement in 2021’s Black Widow, which he claimed was “soul-destroying”.

“It was fine until you have to do the reshoots,” he said to the Radio Times. “Then you find out that a few producers have come down, and your performance is too much, it’s too strong. That’s the way Marvel works. It can be soul-destroying because you feel like you’re doing great work.”

Meanwhile, Paul Dano also gave his opinion on superhero fatigue, which has been attributed as the main reason why Marvel movies have began to become less successful at the box office.

He commented: “It’s an interesting moment where everybody has to go like, ‘OK – what now?’ Hopefully from that, somebody either breathes new life into [comic book movies], or something else blossoms which is not superheroes.”
