‘The Death of Bunny Munro’ director Isabella Eklöf breaks down Matt Smith’s “absolutely amazing” performance
In an exclusive interview with Far Out, The Death of Bunny Munro director Isabella Eklöf broke down exactly why she believes Matt Smith‘s performance is “absolutely amazing”.
Smith plays Bunny Munro in the adaptation of Nick Cave’s second novel. Bunny is a door-to-door salesman. He’s also a sex addict and an alcoholic, and is chased by a serial killer who is making his way down the country.
In Bunny’s head, the killer is coming after him directly; he takes his young son on the road, fighting demons by ignoring them until things reach a fever pitch.
The director said of working with Smith to Far Out, “A dream, a beautiful, intelligent, fun, hard-working actor, so, so invested in the project, and I think, really excited to be allowed something more complex to bite down.”
She continued, “He’s been Doctor Who, and he’s been in these lightweight roles. I mean, heavy in the sense that they’re huge, but something as complex as this, I think he was so excited to be allowed to unfold himself completely. So yeah, he was absolutely amazing.”
The Swedish film director, screenwriter, and editor has also directed feature films Holiday and Kalak, directed an episode of Industry, and co-wrote the Oscar-nominated film Border. She has never before worked with Smith.
Reflecting further on his performance to Far Out she added, “He’s not really sleazy, you know, he’s actually a genuine guy.”
She mused further, “So there was this interesting juxtaposition. Also, he is genuine and earnest and charming and real. And I think that’s part of Bunny’s charm, too.”
The Death of Bunny Munro is available to watch on Sky and Now TV from November 20th, 2025.
