The Cure announce release date of comeback single ‘Alone’
After 16 years, The Cure have confirmed they are set to share their new single, ‘Alone’, on September 26th.
The forthcoming track is the lead single from the band’s upcoming album, Songs of a Lost World, which is set for release on November 1st. Rather than adopting a traditional marketing strategy for the new record, The Cure have undertook a gorilla approach to promoting the release.
They began the album roll-out by delivering black postcards emblazoned with the title Songs of a Lost World. The release date, November 1st, 2024, is also listed in Roman numerals.
Furthermore, The Cure hung a poster outside of The Railway Inn in Crawley. The pub played an important part in their history, as it was the venue of the very first concert. They’ve also shared footage on social media of Blackpool, the city where the band’s frontman Robert Smith was born.
Before announcing the release of ‘Alone’, The Cure provided fans with a sneak peek at the song’s lyrics when they recently launched a new website and a WhatsApp channel ahead of the new release. Upon entering the website, fans must enter the Roman numerals on the postcards to reveal a new promotional artwork alongside an invitation to join the community WhatsApp group.
Additionally, as soon as fans join the WhatsApp group, they are immediately sent lyrics from ‘Alone’, which reads, “This is the end of every song that we sing… Where did it go?”
Now, the wait to hear ‘Alone’ is almost over as The Cure are set to premiere the new single on September 26th on BBC 6 Music. It will receive its first play during Mary Anne Hobbs’ programme on the station which starts at 10:30am and concludes at 1pm. The British rock group are expected to reveal more details about Songs of a Lost World during the broadcast.
What songs feature on The Cure’s new album?
At this stage, no track list has been released for Songs of a Lost World, but during their recent world tour, The Cure previewed many songs which could appear on the album. ‘Alone’ was a permanent fixture of the global jaunt, being played live on 46 occasions in 2022 and 44 times in 2023.
While it’s yet to be confirmed whether they’ll appear on the upcoming album, The Cure are share set to release live versions of new songs ‘And Nothing Is Forever’ and ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’ on October 1st. The pair of tracks appear on The Cure – Novembre: Live in France 2022, which was recorded during the French leg of their tour in November, 2022.
At the Ivor Novello Awards in 2022, Smith said to NME: “Essentially it’s a 12 track album. It’s there, it’s kind of half-mixed and half-finished. It’s a weird thing. It’s kind of evolved over the last two years. It hasn’t always been a good thing to have been left alone with it. You pick at it, like picking at seams, and everything falls apart.”
The iconic frontman also promised that the album will “be worth the wait” and described the forthcoming release as “the best thing we’ve done”. He also claimed it would be out in the world before they hit the road in October, 2022, which is two years earlier than the now-anticipated release date.
