A teenager has caused a major car crash after driving blindfolded as part of the ‘Bird Box challenge’ trend.
The challenge has been inspired by hit Netflix film Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock who must avoid making eye contact with monsters. Thousands of people on social media have taken it upon themselves to recreate the film by performing multiple different tasks while blindfolded.
However, on Monday afternoon, an unnamed 17-year-old caused a highway collision Utah after driving after pulling a beanie hat over her eyes. The Layton police department have since confirmed that . the teenager veered into the other lane, hit another driver, a pole and a wall.
“Honestly, I’m almost embarrassed to have to say ‘Don’t drive with your eyes covered’, but you know apparently we do have to say that,” Layton police officer Travis Lyman said. “The stakes are just so high and it’s just such a potentially dangerous thing as it is: to try and do it in that way is inexcusable. It really puts everybody at risk.”
The police also confirmed that thankfully nobody was seriously injured in the crash.
Netflix has also been forced to issue a warning, tweeting from their official account: “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.”
They added: “We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl” – a reference to the two unnamed children of Bullock’s character – “have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
