Taylor Swift dominates box office while Dwayne Johnson comes in third

Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl is projected to earn $30 to $32million at the US domestic box office by the end of the weekend, providing tough competition for Dwayne Johnson’s latest movie.

The singer-songwriter’s 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, was released on October 3rd. Along with it, an 89-minute feature film including the first music video for the album, ‘The Fate of Ophelia’, as well as song explanations and behind-the-scenes footage, hit cinemas.

Swift is dominating with a decent lead. Last weekend’s box office success story, One Battler After Another, has consequently fallen to number two. Despite this, the Paul Thomas Anderson movie is officially the highest-grossing movie ever for the Phantom Thread and Boogie Nights director.

Swift’s only real new-release competitor comes in the form of a Dwayne Johnson-fronted American biographical sports drama film written, directed, co-produced, and edited by Benny Safdie. The project is only projected to debut with a three-day total of $6.2million.

The movie is failing to engage cinema-goers, despite premiering at the Venice Film Festival to a standing ovation that moved Johnson to tears. In the film, Johnson portrays Mark Kerr, who helped put the UFC on the map, and also dealt with huge personal problems.

Previously gushing about his experience on set, Johnson shared with the audience, “I wanted to be challenged, I wanted to challenge myself, I wanted to step out of a comfort zone that I was in and what that meant. I was very lucky to have our writer and director Benny Safdie who believed in me, and also one of my best friends here, Emily Blunt, who believed and encouraged me too, as well.”

Despite her box office triumph, the ‘Cruel Summer’ singer has already confirmed that she doesn’t plan to tour the project. She shared, “I’m just gonna be really honest with you, I am so tired, like when I think about doing it again. Because I want to do it really well… again. You know?”
