The 1966 Monkees hit Robert Wyatt defended against music snobbery: “I don’t feel the need for any hierarchies”
No doubt in his mind.

The Monkees were an American pop rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1966 for the NBC television series of the same name. Originally created as a fictional group inspired by The Beatles’ film ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, the quartet of Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones and Peter Tork quickly evolved into a genuine recording and touring band.
Despite early criticism for not initially playing on their recordings, the members successfully fought for greater creative control and went on to produce influential albums blending pop, rock, psychedelia and folk rock. The Monkees achieved enormous commercial success with chart-topping singles and albums before disbanding in 1971.
Their music and television series have since earned critical reappraisal, cementing their place as one of the defining pop acts of the 1960s.
“They could have at least done it with a group that has something to offer.”
A strange tale of commercialism.
