The B-52s are an American new wave band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. Celebrated for their playful aesthetic, infectious dance rhythms and eclectic fusion of new wave, punk, surf rock and pop, the group became one of the defining alternative acts of the late 1970s and 1980s.
Their self-titled debut album introduced quirky classics including ‘Rock Lobster’, while later releases such as ‘Cosmic Thing’ propelled them to global success with hits including ‘Love Shack’ and ‘Roam’. The band’s colourful image, distinctive vocal interplay and offbeat humour helped establish them as pioneers of alternative pop.
Despite the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson in 1985, the B-52s endured, remaining one of the most influential and beloved bands to emerge from the American new wave movement.
