Johnny Rotten was born John Joseph Lydon in Holloway, London, to Irish immigrant parents John Christopher Lydon and Eileen Barry Lydon. In 1979, he married German publishing heiress Nora Forster, remaining devoted to her until her death in 2023 after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Lydon became a father figure to Forster's daughter, Ari Up, the lead singer of The Slits.
