Kill Rock Stars: the beginnings of Olympia’s famed indie label
“Putting out bands that were meaningful…”

Elliott Smith was an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose intimate songwriting, intricate guitar work and whispered vocal style made him one of the most influential artists of the indie folk movement.
Emerging from Portland’s independent music scene with the band Heatmiser before embarking on a solo career, Smith earned widespread acclaim through albums including ‘Either/Or’, ‘XO’, ‘Figure 8’ and ‘From a Basement on the Hill’. His music reached a wider audience after his Oscar-nominated song ‘Miss Misery’ appeared in ‘Good Will Hunting’, while his emotionally candid lyrics and melodic sophistication continue to inspire generations of musicians.
