Sweden’s Way Out West offers fans the chance to swap their kidney for a free ticket

Sweden’s Way Out West is offering free tickets as part of its the Kidney Pass initiative, giving fans the opportunity to trade their organs to see Charli XCX.

The festival has announced a new collaboration with More Organ Donation (MOD) to give away a limited number of festival tickets to people who sign up to Sweden’s national donor registry. The sold-out event is set to be headlined by Charli XCX, Chappell Roan and Iggy Pop.

While they won’t be harvesting festivalgoers’ organs at the gates, the scheme has been launched due to the number of sign-ups to the donor registry in Sweden decreasing by more than 30 per cent in recent years.

Statistics shared with Far Out show that 1,550 people have signed up for the Kidney Pass since its launch on August 1st, a major increase compared to the daily average of just 158 registrations in Sweden throughout 2024.

“We know people would do almost anything to get into Way Out West,” said Kimmie Winroth, Festival Manager at Way Out West. “This time, you can actually do some good. It’s the most meaningful festival ticket you’ll ever get.”

Meanwhile, Gabriela Brandén from MOD said: “It’s fantastic that Way Out West is highlighting the issue of organ donation. It’s a vital issue – literally – that saves lives. By bringing attention to it in new contexts, like at a festival, more people get the chance to reflect, talk to their loved ones, and express their wishes in the donation register.”

Way Out West is set to run in Gothenburg from August 7th until August 9th in the Swedish city. Other performers include Queens of the Stone Age, Fontaines DC, Wet Leg, CMAT, Beth Gibbons, Little Simz, Kneecap, The Dare, Mavis Staples, Khruangbin, Pinkpantheress, Hermanos Guttiérez and many more.

Last year, the festival launched an innovative plan to help the fertilisation process by teaming up with an IVF clinic for the Future Fan Stage. It played live recordings from the festival to sperm and eggs in the Eliva IVF clinic in Stockholm as they prepare to enter in vitro fertilisation, which is scientifically proven to improve the fertilisation rate.
