Straight Arrows – ‘Don’t Call My Name’
No matter what type of musical medicine you prefer to ingest to get your kicks, It’s rare that you’ll beat a bravely measured dose of garage rock & roll, especially on a Saturday night in the depths of the city and the moral tightrope that such activity forces us to walk, looms.
It’s that feral, raw, and often confrontational sound that evolved in the USA circa the late 1950s. Drug-riddled rockers such as Kim Fowley, The Seeds, et al. took on it throughout the ’60s, and it was immortalised in Nuggets compilations of the future for the benefit of us all now.
So, it’s about now that we should introduce, in some kind of ironic defiance, the firebrand tune ‘Don’t Call My Name’ by Sydney outfit Straight Arrows as today’s highlight and, oh my, what a track it is!
‘Don’t Call My Name’ is extracted from the Straight Arrows’ latest barnstorming record, Rising, released June 13th.
It was recorded half at frontman Owen’s house and the other half in his new, legitimate studio. Check the rest of it out here; I can assure you that you won’t be let down.
You London dwellers can catch this lot do their thing on August 29th at Power Lunches Arts Café and a few days later on August 31st at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club.
