Steven Spielberg’s new movie delayed by Universal Studios
Universal Studios has changed the release dates for two of its major 2026 releases. Steven Spielberg’s next picture and the follow-up project from Everything Everywhere All At Once directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert will now be released at a later date.
Spielberg’s next film will now open on June 12th instead of May 15th, taking the release date of the untitled movie from Kwan and Scheinert’s project, which has temporarily been taken off the calendar. Universal hasn’t provided a reason for these date changes, though the film from the Everything Everywhere All At Once creators appeared to be in an earlier stage of production due to having no script title or cast announced. It is likely that the studio will release a new date soon for the film.
The details of Speilberg’s project have been kept tightly under wraps. It doesn’t have a logline or title but has been loosely described as “an event film.”
The release date was likely rescheduled to distance it from other large studio projects coming out at the same time, which was previously set to open two weeks after Avengers: Doomsday and a week prior to the Star Wars spin-off, The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film’s new spot now shares a release date with Paramount’s reboot of Scary Movie and debuts a week before Toy Story 5.
It has previously been confirmed that Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colmin Dolmingo, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson will star in Spielberg’s film, which is apparently based around a UFO appearance.
David Kroepp, who previously wrote the screenplay for Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, has written the script for the film, reuniting the director with some of his past collaborators and most beloved subject matter.
Spielberg has not made a film since The Fabelmans in 2022, which was one of his most personal films to date. Given the apparent subject matter of his new film, it seems as though he is returning to his roots and setting out on another adventure story.
