Steven Spielberg insists concept of making alien contact has “become more realistic”

Steven Spielberg has said that the idea of making contact with aliens has “become more realistic”, insisting it will happen within our lifetimes.

The iconic director has always felt a kindred spirit to the supernatural, expressed in some of his classic films such as ET: The Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but he is now taking this to new heights on his latest movie, Disclosure Day.

Speaking to BBC News at the film’s UK premiere in London on June 4th, Spielberg said that his perspective on alien life has changed dramatically over time as understandings and ideas about life beyond Earth have evolved.

“My view has become more realistic,” he said, before adding, “There’s a lot of mystery and things that are undisclosed but I’ve become more optimistic that people are going to be able to discover things that we have not been allowed to discover.”

Although firm details on the plot of Disclosure Day remain scant ahead of its imminent release in cinemas, it is said to chart the mass unravelling of a government conspiracy as the people fight the day of reckoning with aliens.

As much as this sounds terrifying, the director said that at its heart, the film is “about empathy and bringing people together”, quickly noting that an event like discovering alien existence “would bring people together”.

It comes as the iconic filmmaker was forced to confirm this week that Disclosure Day has, in fact, not been made with the influence of the “deep state”.

While appearing on The Rewatchables podcast, Spielberg dispelled: “The biggest urban legend that is occurring right now involves my movie coming out, Disclosure Day, that somehow I have made this movie in concert with deep state factions.”

Despite joking that he is “starting to believe” the conspiracy about humans having subliminal interactions with aliens, he added: “However, I made this movie independent of any influence except what I know and what I’ve been following for the last seven decades.”

Disclosure Day is set to be released in cinemas on June 12th, 2026.
