Steven Soderbergh confirms his John Lennon documentary is “almost done”

Steven Soderbergh has confirmed his upcoming documentary on John Lennon’s final interview is “almost done”.

The interview that Soderbergh’s forthcoming film will focus on was given by Lennon and Yoko Ono on December 8th, 1980, to RKO Radio in New York, just hours before he was murdered that evening.

The audio interview, which was to promote Double Apartment, was recorded in the couple’s apartment shortly before Lennon was fatally shot outside the same Dakota Building complex.

While speaking at a press conference at the inaugural Doha Film Festival, Soderbergh confirmed the project was “almost done”, before revealing, “I’m excited about it, it’s an incredible historical document, this interview.”

Soderbergh, who is in Qatar for a screening of his new movie The Christophers, continued (via Screen Daily), “The job is to present it in such a way that enhances the interview and doesn’t distract from it.”

He also clarified, “I’m not looking to reinvent the form, I’m just hoping to create a film that gets as many people to hear what John and Yoko [Ono] had to say on that afternoon as possible. They were both so free in their discussion.”

Soderbergh then said, “As someone who’s been interviewed many times, I was surprised at how open and excited they were to talk. You would think they’d never been interviewed before. I want that to come across to the audience, and everything that they said 45 years ago is not just relevant today.”

The director shared of the message he hopes it will give to audiences, “It’s possibly even more relevant in terms of relationships, politics, how we treat each other, how systems work on the individual and above all, the importance of love in our daily life and our work.”

As it stands, there is no title for the upcoming documentary, and Soderbergh is yet to confirm a release date for the project.
