St Vincent has written a song inspired by influential producer Sophie

As she revealed more information about her upcoming album, St Vincent shared a special dedication. One of the album tracks is written in memory of the influential DJ, artist and producer, Sophie.

When Sophie passed away in January 2021 after falling off a roof in Athens, shockwaves were sent through the entire music industry. Her unique style helped merge left-field sounds and electronic detailing with more classic genre stylings to create the hyper-pop wave. Some of her most notable works included her collaborations with Charli XCX on her Vroom Vroom EP, alongside work with Nicki Minaj, Madonna and Shygirl.

After her death, tributes flooded in from across all genres as artists who had met or been inspired by her paid their respects. Still feeling the loss in 2024, St Vincent has penned a dedication to the producer on her upcoming album, All Born Screaming.

In a conversation with The Guardian, the artist spoke about the track ‘Sweetest Fruit’ and the producer’s influence. “I was an admirer from afar, we never met,” she said. “But I read about the way that she fell because she was trying to get a better look at the moon, which was just the most beautiful, poetic thing I’ve ever heard.”

She said the song is all about “people trying for transcendence, and at least they were taking a big swing or trying for something beautiful”. Referencing Sophie’s life and powerful career spent trying to make new things and inspire new sounds, it sounds like a fitting tribute.

However, St Vincent is cautious of the connection. “The internet twists things, and I don’t want it to be seen like I’m trying to capitalise on somebody’s death,” she said for quick clarification.

Sophie’s story is just one that inspired the upcoming record, which deals with mortality. “For me, the record is black, white, and all the colours in the fire because it’s about life and death,” she told NME. “Life and death is pretty binary – you’re alive or you’re dead. The record’s about what is to be alive and to embrace that agony and ecstasy.”

All Born Screaming is set for release on April 26th, with the raging lead single ‘Broken Man’ out now to welcome fans into this dark and gothic new era.
