The songwriter Heart claims does something “no one else can do”
Emerging from Seattle in 1973, Heart, much like their peers, were inspired by the groundbreaking artistic strides of the 1960s. Influenced by hard rock and heavy metal, the band, spearheaded by vocalist Ann Wilson and her sister, Nancy, distinguished themselves from the many groups that emerged during the era.
Despite their various successes, the Wilson sisters faced significant setbacks due to industry misogyny, an issue Nancy recently commented on. “I don’t know whether the woman thing in rock was the chicken or the egg because, for a long time, women didn’t even attempt to enter the rock scene because it was just too hard.”
She continued: “I mean, nobody took you seriously. Nobody gave you any credibility. So you didn’t even try. But once a few of us kicked the door open enough to squeeze through, more and more women started to come in and see that it was okay and you could do it.”
From the outset, therefore, Heart defied expectations and challenged the status quo. Their music was a seamless fusion of sound and resistance, a reflection of their desire to push back against societal constraints and power dynamics. The Wilson sisters and their bandmates were unafraid to blend sonic forms and experiment with new ideas, tearing up the rulebook and forging their own path in the music industry.
Moreover, as Heart’s reputation grew, so too did their fanbase. Hits like ‘Crazy on You’, ‘Barracuda’, and ‘Magic Man’ propelled them to the top of the charts, earning them widespread acclaim and cementing their status as rock icons. In addition, their electrifying live performances further solidified their place in music history, captivating audiences with their raw energy and undeniable talent.
Regarding influences, the Wilsons once shared their multiple favourites during an episode of The Celebrity Playlist Podcast. Alongside big names like Steely Dan, they also praised the work of Lucinda Williams. According to the sisters, Williams is completely unrivalled: “[Williams is someone who] nails it emotionally and poetically in a way that no one else can do it,” they explained.
As a result of her poignant and introspective songwriting, distinctive vocals, and blend of folk and country, Williams has been widely recognised as one of the most prominent lyrical trailblazers of her time. Her songwriting prowess, often compared to that of literary giants, combined with her emotive vocals and raw honesty, has become her biggest appeal, while the lasting impact of her soulful performances and heartfelt storytelling continues to endear new generations to her music.
