Sharon Van Etten has been digging back into the archives to share ‘All Over Again’, her B-side track which was first recorded back in 2015.
The aforementioned period of time was a deeply personal one for Van Etten. Soon after releasing 2014 album Are We There, she followed it up followed up the EP I Don’t Want to Let You Down just a year later. The first released the breakdown of a 10-year relationship, one of which Van Etten said was about “someone I still care about but don’t speak with any more” in an interview with NPR.
Detailing that particular period of songwriting, the musician added: “I’m not very good at communicating my emotions,” in the same discussion. “And usually it’s when I’m really sad and or in a dark place… I was pretty angry. Sometimes in those situations I feel like I go into a victim role and completely shut down. I’m not aware of my surroundings and I can’t connect with people.”
She added: “I have to retreat and write and record and listen back to it. It’s all part of how I write anyway,” it offers a fascinating and deeply honest reflection of Van Etten’s ability to channel her deepest thoughts into music and, with the release of ‘I Don’t Want To Let You Down’, the title itself tells the story.
“My 7″ ‘I Don’t Want To Let You Down’ had a B-side that was never digitally released – until today,” Van Etten said in a statement. “‘All Over Again’ is a deeply personal song written during the ‘Are We There’ sessions. Broken hearted years ago and driven to find true love, it’s hard to believe I was ever there when I look back now from such a fulfilled space. I’m humbled to share yet another vulnerable moment with you.”
