Sharon Stone was “laughed out of the studio” when she pitched ‘Barbie’ movie in the 1990s
Sharon Stone has revealed that she made an effort to propose a Barbie movie to a Hollywood studio during the 1990s, only to be met with laughter and dismissal.
Taking to Instagram, Barbie’s America Ferrera shared a video of her speech while accepting the ‘SeeHer Award’ at the Critics Choice Awards. In the clip, Ferrera thanked her co-star Margot Robbie, saying, “You saw value in Barbie, an entirely female idea that most would have dismissed as too girly, too frivolous or just too problematic.”
In the comments section, Stone wrote: “I was laughed out the studio when i came w the Barbie idea in the 90s w the support of the head of Barbie. How far we’ve come thank you ladies for your courage and endurance.”
Ferrera, who plays a supporting role in Barbie, also expressed gratitude to Greta Gerwig and extended her thanks. “Thank you for proving through your incredible mastery as a filmmaker that women’s stories have no difficulty achieving cinematic greatness and box-office history at the same time,” she said.
Ferrera’s portrayal of Gloria in the movie marked a crucial moment in the film, as the Barbies came to grasp and acknowledge the everyday experiences of women, shedding light on the double standards they encounter.
Since its release, Barbie has achieved an astounding $1.4billion in earnings, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the most successful release in Warner Bros.’ studio history.
The movie has received acclaim from various corners of Hollywood, and Gerwig aims to clinch some of the prestigious accolades at the Academy Awards scheduled for March 10th, 2024, with hopes of securing ‘Best Picture’.
In a four-and-a-half star review of Barbie, the publication stated: “This is certainly not merely a film to watch only once, to laugh and sing along to, and be done with. In fact, Barbie may just accomplish the greatest of all art’s tasks, and incite change. Don’t be fooled by her hype or her history; Barbie is an essential piece of cinema for the modern age.”
