Self Esteem and Meadowhall team up to release T-shirt for breast cancer charity
Self Esteem is one of modern music’s most exciting and best-selling pop stars. Her acclaim can be attributed to the strength of her voice, her excellent live performances and, most of all, her innovation as an artist. That’s reflected not only in the music she creates, which isn’t afraid to blend pop into spoken word, noise and other genres but in many other aspects of her career.
The Sheffield-born Mercury Award nominee has been responsible for some fantastic outfits which pay homage to where she is from and her personal life. This can be best represented by what she wore on stage at Glastonbury in 2022, a tribute to both Madonna and Meadowhall, as she wore a corset similar to Madonna’s Jean-Paul Gaultier but with Meadowhall domes instead of cones.
“It was her concept and we brought it to life,” said designer Ollie Spragley, “Rebecca [Self Esteem] had been saying she really wanted to do something with Meadowhall, as it had always been a dream of hers to get on the big screen there. She also said she wanted to give a nod to Madonna and her Jean-Paul Gaultier corset with the conical bra, so Luke [Day] came to me and said, ‘Do you think we could do something?’”
Now, Self Esteem is teaming up with Meadowhall to create T-shirts inspired by her Glastonbury look. The money made from the merch will be used to raise vital funds for the breast cancer charity Breast Cancer Now.
Ollie Spragley has also helped with the design of the T-shirt. The charity is close to his heart, as this year marks the tenth anniversary of his mother passing away from breast cancer. “I am honoured to have been involved in such an amazing project and genuinely believe we’ve taken a beautiful design and turned it into something that will help to change people’s lives,” he said. “The charity we are supporting is very close to my heart – with Breast Cancer Now, under its former name, providing crucial support to my family when we needed it most, and I’m so pleased to give something back.”
“To be able to take that iconic image and use it to raise awareness and funds for such an incredibly important cause, that really is special,” Self Esteem said when discussing the new shirts. “I’m so excited we’re able to announce the initiative that we’ve been working so hard on, and I hope our region does what it does best and comes together to get behind the T-shirt, and really make a difference for a great charity.”
Self Esteem’s limited edition shirt will be on sale exclusively in Meadowhall for £20, with all the money raised going to help Breast Cancer Now.
