Selena Gomez had wild pitch for killer in new ‘Only Murders in the Building’

As one of the three leads and an executive producer of the hit series Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez presumably has at least some input into the creative direction of her storylines.

Not enough to have all of her suggestions taken on board, though, after the actor revealed she made a wild pitch that would have completely upended audience expectations. It would have been a jaw-dropper without a doubt, but it’s easy to see why the showrunners waved away her bold idea.

Since premiering in the summer of 2021, Only Murders in the Building has rapidly evolved into one of the most popular shows on television. The effortless chemistry of the central trio Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short has been integral to that success, and the band will be staying together for the foreseeable future.

Just days after the fourth season premiered, a fifth was officially confirmed, even if common sense would indicate that Gomez’s Mabel Mora, Martin’s Charles Haden-Savage, and Short’s Oliver Putnam would be better off living somewhere else when so many residents of their apartment building tend to turn up dead.

A loving embrace of modern pop culture’s true crime obsession that also subverts and deconstructs everything audiences and listeners alike have come to love about the genre, Only Murders in the Building has become such a big deal that many of Hollywood’s best and brightest are clamouring for a guest spot.

Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, Eugene Levy, Tina Fey, Nathan Lane, Melissa McCarthy, and Sting are just some of the famous faces to have swung by across its four seasons so far, but it’s the chemistry between Mabel, Charles, and Oliver that keeps viewers coming back for more.

Gomez is clearly happy to stick around, even if she did confess that at one stage, she’d floated the concept of Mabel being revealed as one of the killers. “I did pitch that,” she admitted to Variety. “I don’t think it’s going to work out, but who knows? You never know.”

That’s not to say it’s been permanently taken off the table, and it would be one hell of a way to round out the final season of Only Murders in the Building, whenever that may be. However, with over 50 Primetime Emmy nominations to its name so far and no signs of the shine wearing off any time soon, Gomez’s desire to be the culprit doesn’t look like it’ll be realised in the near future.
