Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial: Jury reaches verdict on four of five counts
The jury in Sean ‘Diddy‘ Combs’ sex trafficking trial has reached a partial verdict. The 12 jurors, eight men and four women, decided on four of the five counts on July 1st.
Judge Arun Subramanian was informed that a unanimous decision was made on all counts except racketeering conspiracy, stating “unpersuadable opinions on both sides.”
The majority decision was made at 4pm after nearly two days of deliberations, which are scheduled to continue at 9am on July 2nd.
For the RICO charge, the jury must find that two or more people agreed to participate in a criminal enterprise, that Combs was a wilful member, that two crimes were committed as part of the conspiracy, and that these acts affected interstate or foreign commerce.
Jurors are considering bribery, drug distribution, arson, kidnapping, sex trafficking, forced labour, witness tampering, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
Speaking to the jury, Subramanian said, “I ask that you keep deliberating. It is your duty as jurors to consult with one another and to deliberate with a view to reaching an agreement.
“Each of you must decide the case for himself or herself, but you should do so only after a consideration of the case with your fellow jurors, and you should not hesitate to change an opinion when convinced that it is erroneous.”
He added, “Discuss and weigh your respective opinions dispassionately, without regard to sympathy, without regard to prejudice or favour for either party, and follow my instructions on the law.”
Combs pleaded not guilty to charges of racketeering, sex trafficking by force, and transportation for purposes of prostitution. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
