Scarlett Johansson to star in new ‘The Exorcist’ reboot from Mike Flanagan

Scarlett Johansson is set to star in a reboot of The Exorcist franchise being directed and produced by Mike Flanagan.

The Jurassic World actor is set to front the film in an as-yet unspecified role, but it has been confirmed that Flanagan will present a fresh and reimagined take on the classic horror franchise.

Announcing the news of his lead star, the director said in a statement to The Wrap: “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”

It comes after the previous instalment to the franchise, The Exorcist: Believer, fell short at the box office upon its release in 2023. As such, with Flanagan producing for Universal Pictures, his film is said to be a standalone movie rather than a sequel.

The filmmaker, who has previously helmed other huge horror titles including The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, said The Exorcist has always inspired his cinematic vision.

The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker,” he added in his statement, “and it’s an honour to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe.”

Noting the production credits for the upcoming film, Flanagan then said: “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favourite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

Johansson has not yet commented publicly on the announcement of her leading the new film, but it comes off the back of her most recent blockbuster role fronting the cast of Jurassic World: Rebirth, alongside Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.

Furthermore, the Hollywood actor also made her directorial debut in September this year with the release of Eleanor The Great, starring June Squibb in the lead role.

No further details on the plot, casting, or release of Flanagan’s Exorcist reboot have yet been revealed.
