Scarlett Johansson asked to be removed as an executive producer on ‘Thunderbolts*’: “I wasn’t involved:
Scarlett Johansson has revealed she asked for her executive producer credit to be removed from Marvel’s Thunderbolts*.
The movie, released earlier this year, kicked off a new era for Marvel and starred Johansson as part of an all-star cast that also featured David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and many more.
In a new conversation with her co-star, Harbour, with Interview Magazine, he complimented her on the credit as executive producer, stating, “It’s the opening day of a movie that basically you are the seventh Thunderbolt in. Your character is all over this movie…. You are an executive producer on it. Congratulations.”
In response, Johansson explained that she attempted to have the title removed and suggested it was given to her for contractual reasons rather than her possessing the power of an executive producer on set. She told Harbour: “I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn’t involved.”
Meanwhile, in the same conversation, Johansson, who played Black Widow for more than a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opened up about the challenges that come from acting on a production of its size.
Johansson honestly shared: “Some of the films that I did for Marvel engaged my character more than others. Like in Captain America: The Winter Soldier with Chris, we were really dynamic. In some of the other films, the cast was so enormous and there was so much plot to serve that you start to feel like you’re a device to move it along.”
She continued: “And if you’re committed to five and a half months of that, it’s like, ‘Okay. I can’t paint my nails, I can’t get a haircut.’ These sound like silly problems, but your identity is wrapped up in this job for a long time, and if you’re not doing engaging work as an actor, you feel a little cagey sometimes.”
Johansson has left the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the exit of Black Widow, and will not be appearing in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.
Her next movie, Jurrasic World Rebirth, is set to be released in cinemas internationally on July 2nd, 2025.
