Scarlett Johansson declined Universal’s request to join Instagram to promote ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’: “I think the film will do fine”

Scarlett Johansson has revealed that she requested Universal’s request that she join Instagram in a bid to promote Jurassic World: Rebirth.

The upcoming blockbuster is set for release on July 2nd, and Universal are hoping it will be a summer box-office smash. As a result of the high budget they spent on making the movie, the company wanted to use every marketing tool in their arsenal, but Johansson stood firm and refused to join Instagram.

The actor told InStyle: “I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal (Pictures), and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth?’ (I) get a lot of pressure to join social media.”

“Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could,” she said of her decision to decline their request.

Johansson believes that having a presence on social media would damage her authenticity because she does not understand or care for that world. She explained: “The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient. So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.”

Maya Hawke recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she doesn’t care for Instagram and would delete it if it wasn’t for the movie industry’s obsession with followers.

She revealed: “I’m talking about deleting my Instagram and (some directors are_ like, ‘Just so you know when I’m casting a movie with some producers, they hand me a sheet with the amount of collective followers I have to get from the cast. So if you delete your Instagram and I lose those followers, understand these are the kinds of people I need to cast around you.'”

Jurassic World: Rebirth is directed by Gareth Edwards and will be released on July 2nd, 2025.
