Ryan Gosling is no longer interested in “dark” roles
Ryan Gosling, discussing his career plans, has explained why he is only interested in taking up lighter roles and why his family was now his main priority.
Over recent years, Gosling has flexed his comedic muscles on screen extensively, which has been a much more fulfilling experiences for him than dipping his toes into darker roles. While he’s limited himself from a creative standpoint, Gosling is confident his decision was the right one, and his Academy Award for Barbie proves this, too.
While acting is his profession, and in theory, Gosling should be able to separate his work from his home life, it’s an easier task said than done. After a long day on set, it’s challenging for Gosling to relax upon finishing his work if he’s tied up on an all-encompassing project.
In a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, Gosling explained: “I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place. This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first.”
Gosling then explained how La La Land “was the first” role that made him alter his approach to his career and re-aligned his focus. The 2016 film opened his eyes and made the actor realise that he didn’t need to take his craft so seriously.
He continued: “It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing.’ Their interest in ‘Barbie’ and their disinterest in Ken was an inspiration.”
Gosling concluded: “I thought, they were already making little movies about their Barbies on the iPad when it happened, so the fact that I was going off to work to make one too, we just felt like we were aligned.”
His latest venture sees Gosling team up with Emily Blunt in The Fall Guy, which is currently in cinemas worldwide. The Fall Guy revolves around Gosling’s character, Colt Seavers, a seasoned stuntman who has taken a hiatus from the industry to focus on his physical and mental well-being. However, his peaceful break is interrupted when he is called back into action after the disappearance of the lead actor in a hit movie directed by his ex-partner, Jody Moreno, portrayed by Emily Blunt.
