Russell Crowe hails Harry Lawtey as “the future of British cinema”

Russell Crowe has heaped praise upon Industry star Harry Lawtey, calling him the “future of British cinema”.

Crowe and Lawtey have recently finished shooting the upcoming Amma Asante movie, Billion Dollar Spy, which also features Vera Farmiga, Justin Theroux, and Rufus Sewell.

While talking about his upcoming projects during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Crowe first shared that he plays an “Albanian money launderer” in Bear Country which he promises is “really funny” while also being “goofy” and “dramatic”.

He then discussed Billion Dollar Spy, revealing, “So, after that, I went back to Budapest, and made a thing with a young British director Amma Asante called Billion Dollar Spy with a young English actor called Harry Lawtey who is… he is the future of British cinema. He is a very intelligent, classy actor.”

Crowe then divulged information about his role, sharing, “In that one, I play a Russian selling state secrets to the Americans. A Russian scientist.”

Lawtey first rose to prominence in 2020 when he starred in the BBC drama series Industry, following a group of young investment bankers in London. Lawtey featured in the first three seasons, but will not reprise his role as Robert Spearing in the forthcoming fourth series, which is expected to arrive in 2026.

The English star has since established himself in Hollywood with a prominent role in Joker: Folie à Deux, and also played Richard Burton in the biopic, Mr Burton.

Meanwhile, Crowe’s new movie, Nuremberg, is set to arrive in UK cinemas on November 14th, 2025. The post-World War II drama about the Nuremberg trials stars Malek as Army psychiatrist Douglas Kelly opposite Crowe as Hermann Göring.

The official synopsis reads: “The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon), have the task of ensuring the Nazi regime answers for the unveiled horrors of the Holocaust while a US Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek) is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Herman Göring (Russell Crowe).”
