Roxette cancel 40th anniversary North American tour due to “hugley increased touring costs”
Swedish pop duo Roxette have cancelled their forthcoming North American tour due to “logistics and hugely increased touring costs”.
The surprising cancellation came at what would’ve been a time of celebration for the band, after their 1990 hit ‘It Must Have Been Love’ pulled in over a billion YouTube views.
On July 25th, their social media read, “Due to logistics and hugely increased touring costs, Live Nation US has decided to postpone the North American tour. Hope to see you some other time down the road.” The announcement was signed off, “Team Rox”.
A day later, founder and frontman Per Gessle followed up the announcement with a more personal touch.
“Lena, I and the band are of course disappointed,” he wrote on social media, adding, “We were really looking forward to this northamerican tour and US is by far our biggest streaming market.”
The follow-up statement went on, “This decision was made by Live Nation USA, which they probably based on their own calculations.”
Gessle concluded, “I hope we can play for our fab fans in the USA and Canada at some point in the near future. / P.”
Despite the alleged “postponement”, fans who had previously bought tickets had received notice that their money would be automatically refunded.
The band is currently on tour in Europe celebrating 40 years together, having most recently played a show in the Czech Republic on July 24th, with their next upcoming slot taking place in Germany on July 26th.
From there, they are booked until August 29th, when they will finish the admirable run of European shows at Switzerland’s Seaside Festival.
Tour cancellations have become one of the biggest trends of the year as the cost of living surges and the creative industries bear the brunt of the issue.
Recently, Kacey Musgraves also axed several shows on her forthcoming North American tour, following the footsteps of the likes of Mike D, The Beach Boys, and Ryan Adams.
