Rosalía says meeting Patti Smith was “one of the most beautiful things ever”
Spanish pop star Rosalía has described meeting her hero, Patti Smith, as “beautiful”.
Rosalía, who today releases her new studio album Lux, recently came into contact with Smith at the world-famous Electric Lady Studios in New York, which was a moment to savour.
Notably, ‘La Yagular’ from Rosalía’s new album contains a recording from Smith in 1976, in which she says during an interview, “Break on through to the other side. Going through one door isn’t enough, a million doors aren’t enough.”
During a new appearance on BBC 6 Music, Rosalía explained that the meeting happened thanks to Lee Foster, who runs Electric Lady Studios, telling host Nick Grimshaw: “So we met because he wanted us to meet.”
She recalled of the special day: “And so basically I remember walking down the stairs. I was wearing this white dress. And I was walking down the stairs, like running kind of like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to make Patti Smith wait!'”.
The ‘Berghain‘ singer continued: “And I just arrive, and she was so… she had so much light in her face in her eyes in her smile and I couldn’t believe… and she just pointed out the dress I remember she said, ‘I love your dress’. And then she talked to me about the song and then we started sharing and it was one of the most beautiful things ever to meet her, because I really admire her.”
Rosalía then heaped further praise on the artistic spirit that Smith possesses, “She’s the best, she’s you know like so free and so… she inspires me so much.”
She then remembered the mind-blowing moment that she first witnessed Smith in concert, recalling, “I saw her with my mum. We went both together to watch her perform and that was crazy. It was the first time that I could see her perform and I was like, ‘Wow’.”
In addition to Rosalía releasing Lu, Smith also published her new memoirs, Bread of Angels, earlier this week.
