Roger Daltrey will no longer perform iconic The Who scream

Roger Daltrey is set to head out on the road this summer, but his performance won’t include the iconic scream from ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’.

The singer will take to stages across North America throughout the month, beginning in Pennsylvania on June 10th. Accompanied by an electric/acoustic band, his set will comprise tracks from his solo career, classics from his days with The Who, and stories from along the way.

However, The Who fans may be disappointed if they’re expecting to hear a certain legendary scream. In their 1971 single, ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, Daltrey delivers a screeching “Yeah”, which has become an iconic part of the song, but the singer no longer plans to perform it live.

While he is willing to feature ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ on his setlist, Daltrey has decided that he has “had enough” of the scream after 55 years, as he recently divulged to Billboard. “I’m not gonna do the scream,” he stated, “I’m gonna get the f–king audience to do the scream.”

“I don’t even want to try it now,” he admitted, “It’s brutal on the vocal chords. They can do the scream, and I’ll do everything else. I’m more into singing these days. At the age of 80, I think I deserve to be.”

Though his age may have made him into a singer rather than a screamer, it hasn’t dulled his zest for touring. He will embark upon 11 dates across North America this month, with shows in New York, Boston, Canada and more. The tour will conclude in Illinois at the end of the month, on June 29th.

Daltrey’s accompanying band will also include a few familiar names to The Who fans, including Simon Townshend, the younger brother of fellow vocalist Pete Townshend. The younger Townshend has performed with The Who and several of its associated projects in the past and is set to take to the stage alongside Daltrey once more this summer.

Daltrey will also be joined by special guests at certain shows, including singer KT Tunstall, who is best known for her iconic hit ‘Suddenly I See’, and folk artist Dan Bern.

Despite his plans to head out on the road, Daltrey hasn’t released any new material recently. The singer hasn’t released a studio album in six years, following the release of his 10th full-length offering, As Long as I Have You, in the summer of 2018.
