Robert Pattinson lined up for ‘Dune 3’

Director Denis Villeneuve is reportedly eyeing Robert Pattinson for the upcoming third instalment of the Dune series.

The actor is just coming off the Bong Joon-ho science fiction comedy Mickey 17, which fared well with critics but crashed at the box office. Villeneuve is still working on the script, which will be titled Dune: The Messiah, but some of the cast is already set in stone, including Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.

The Dune films have been an across-the-board success for Legendary Pictures. The first two instalments raked in $1.12 billion at the global box office and earned 15 Oscar nominations, winning eight awards. Based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel, the story follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet), the heir to the House Atreides, who emerges as a leader in the bloody war of the desert planet Arrakis in the distant future.

It is not yet known which part Villeneuve is envisioning for Pattinson, though he would be far from the only A-lister to fill a supporting role in the franchise. Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Florence Pugh, and Austin Butler have appeared in at least one of the previous two films.

Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy, who makes an uncredited appearance in Dune: Part 2, are expected to return for the third instalment, which will take place a dozen years after the events in the last film. Jason Momoa has also revealed that he will be returning to his role as Duncan Idaho.

Pattinson has a packed schedule this year. On top of the recent release of Mickey 17, he is currently shooting the star-studded Christopher Nolan movie The Odyssey, working on the Warner Bros. Batman franchise as the titular Caped Crusader, and starring in an upcoming A24 film opposite Zendaya called The Drama.

Still, according to Variety, Villeneuve is hoping he’ll set aside some time in his calendar to make a trip to Arrakis.
