Robert De Niro says Donald Trump is “destroying” the US: “We have to save this country”
Robert De Niro has called upon his fellow Americans to “save this country” from Donald Trump.
The Hollywood icon has been one of the most prominent dissenting voices of Trump since he began his first term of office in the White House a decade ago.
Now, during an appearance on The Best People With Nicole Wallace podcast by MS Now, De Niro said of the president, “The story is our country, and Trump is destroying it, and who knows what his reasons are, but it’s sick, it’s fucked up. We have to save this country.”
He then called upon people to come together to stand up against the regime, adding, “All I know is people have to have to resist, resist, resist. There’s no easy way. It’s not going to come to you easy.”
De Niro’s rallying cry continued, “You know, there’s a time when you know in your own life and your own survival, you better do this. You better jump and run through the fire because if you don’t run through the fire, you’re not getting out, and that’s what we have to do.”
In the same interview, De Niro also claimed that Trump will not voluntarily leave office and it will be down to American citizens to bring an end to his rule, stating, “He will never leave. We have to make him leave”. De Niro added, “He jokes now about nationalising the elections. He’s not joking. We’ve seen enough already.”
Last year, De Niro called Trump a “philistine” at the Cannes Film Festival and said that the US is “fighting like hell for the democracy we once took for granted”.
He also gave his full support to the ‘No Kings’ protest last September, declaring, “Now we have a would-be king who wants to take it away? King Donald I. Fuck that. We are rising up again this time. Nonviolently raising our voices to declare ‘No Kings’.”
Trump is yet to respond to De Niro’s latest comments. In 2018, after De Niro criticised him at the Tony Awards, he labelled the actor “a very Low IQ individual” and claimed “he may be ‘punch-drunk'”.
