Robert De Niro calls Donald Trump a “classic bully”
Robert De Niro has described Donald Trump as a “classic bully” and urged people in the US to continue protesting.
Over the weekend, over seven million people took to the streets in the United States to participate in the ‘No Kings’ protests, which has the full support of De Niro.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s The Weekend on October 19th, De Niro highlighted the historical significance of the ‘No Kings’ protest, stating, “The original No Kings protest was 250 years ago.”
He continued, “Americans decided they didn’t want to live under the rule of King George III. They declared their independence and fought a bloody war for democracy. We’ve had two and a half centuries of democracy since then. Often challenging, sometimes messy, always essential, and we fought in two World Wars to preserve it.”
De Niro then said why he believes the protests are relevant today with Trump in the White House, adding, “Now we have a would-be king who wants to take it away? King Donald I. Fuck that. We are rising up again this time. Nonviolently raising our voices to declare ‘No Kings’.”
The Hollywood icon also stated that “we can’t let up”, before explaining, “Cannot let up on him because he is not going to leave the White House. He does not want to leave the White House. Anybody thinks he, oh, he’ll do this, he’ll do that, it’s just deluding themselves.”
De Niro added, “It’s a classic bully situation. We see it, and there’s no other way to face a bully. You have to face him and fight it out and back them off and back him down. That’s the only way this is going to work.”
Since Trump entered politics, De Niro has been one of the most outspoken figures against him in the film industry. Notably, he turned up outside court during Trump’s hush money trial, and also used his speech at Cannes Film Festival in May while accepting an honorary Palme d’Or to describe him as a “philistine”.
