Robbie Williams shares cover of Wet Leg’s ‘Chaise Longue’
Robbie Williams has covered Wet Leg’s indie-rock anthem ‘Chaise Longue’ in BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.
Williams has had his eye on the indie-rock band for quite some time. In 2022, the ‘Angels’ singer made his appreciation for their music known. He confessed on an Italian radio station, “I like this band called Wet Leg. I’d really like to work with them. I don’t know if they’d like to work with me.”
Now, Williams has taken his fascination with the band into Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Williams chose to cover ‘Chaise Lounge’, the debut song from Wet Leg released in 2021 as the lead single from their Mercury Prize-nominated self-titled album.
Williams chose some of the lyrics from the tongue-in-cheek, deadpan vocals in the first verse, singing: “Mommy, daddy, look at me. I joined Take That and got a pop star degree. All my friends call it the big D. I joined Take That and I got the big D.”
Later in the cover, he throws his very own single, ‘Candy’, into the mix. ‘Candy’ was released in 2012 as the lead single from his ninth studio album, Take the Crown. If that weren’t enough, he throws in a “Hey, ho, let’s go,” refrain from The Ramones‘ classic ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ for good measure.
On October 9th, the solo star played his smallest ever show in Camden, north London. At the no-phones event, he ran through his debut album in full, as well as his unreleased, upcoming record, Britpop, in its entirety.
At the event, he admitted that he had pushed back the album’s release to avoid a chart battle with Taylor Swift, who recently released her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. He told the crowd, “We’re all pretending [the scheduling change] is not about Taylor Swift, but it fucking is, you can’t compete with that.”
He continued, “I was worried about making you all wait for the record. But then I was like, ‘Fuck it’. I’m sorry, but I’m fucking being selfish. How many times in your life do you get to have the most number one albums the UK has fucking ever had.”
Last week, Williams’ planned performance in Istanbul was cancelled due to public safety concerns amid his past performances in Israel. He shared on social media, “City authorities have cancelled the show, in the interests of public safety. The last thing I would ever want to do is to jeopardise the safety of my fans – their safety and security come first.”
