Rob Reiner’s final movie delayed following director’s death

Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: The Final Finale has been delayed following the death of director Rob Reiner.

The film, which is the follow-up to Spinal Tap II that arrived in cinemas in September, was shot this summer at the historic site in England, which the fictional band famously have a song titled.

The live concert reportedly saw the band’s Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer perform alongside musical A-listers Shania Twain, Eric Clapton and Josh Groban.

Now, Variety reports that distribution company Bleecker Street acquired the rights to the movie in October and initially planned for an IMAX release in 2026.

Understandably, those plans have now been put on ice due to recent events. A source close to the situation told the aforementioned publication that “the best path forward is decided with those closest to Rob and his family”.

Reiner had been full of enthusiasm for the release of Spinal Tap at Stonehenge: The Final Finale, according to Eric Idle.

The Monty Python star wrote on X following Reiner’s passing, “Rob Reiner was a lovely man. I spoke to him last night for over an hour. I always enjoyed his company. I met him at his Dad’s in 1975. He was telling me about filming at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future.”

Idle’s heartbreaking tribute continued, “This is so awful. I shall miss him. A clever, talented and very thoughtful man. So awful.”

Following the death of Reiner and his wife, Michele, on December 14th, the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, aged 32, was subsequently booked by the Los Angeles Police Department shortly after their bodies were found.

On December 16th, Reiner was officially charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. Reiner also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife.

Due to the severity of the charges made against Reiner, it has been confirmed by police officials in Los Angeles that he could possibly face the death penalty if found guilty or life without the possibility of parole.
