Nick Reiner charged with murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner
Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with the murder of his father and mother, Michele Singer Reiner.
The famed director and his wife, Michele, were found stabbed to death in their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on December 14th.
If found guilty, Nick could be sentenced to a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In a statement given about the ruling on December 16th, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hoochman discussed the difficult process of working on cases of this nature, saying, “Prosecuting these cases involving family members are some of the most challenging and most heart wrenching cases that this office faces because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes involved.”
After confirming that Nick was named as a suspect in the case on December 15th, authorities said that he would be held without bail.
The charges that Nick has been brought up on are eligible for the death penalty. However, the District Attorney’s office has yet to announce whether they are pursuing that ruling.
Upon being taken into custody, Nick was initially supposed to appear before the Supreme Court of Los Angeles on December 16th. However, it was later confirmed that he would not be appearing on the stand.
Nick’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, known for working on cases by Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein, said that his client was not medically authorised to appear in court, saying that Nick “had not been medically cleared to be transferred from the jail to the courthouse.”
The news of Rob and Michele’s deaths were confirmed by their family on December 14th. The remaining members of their family are asking for privacy at this time as they process the sudden loss.
Since news of their deaths were announced, multiple celebrities have paid their respects to his memory. Among the first people on the scene following their deaths were Billy Crystal, known for his starring role in Reiner’s classic When Harry Met Sally, and Larry David.
Tributes for Reiner also extended into the world of politics, with Barack Obama saying that his works “gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people — and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.” Michelle Obama also said that the Reiners were set to meet the Obamas the night of their deaths.
Rob was 78, and Michele was 68 at the time of their deaths.
Nick is yet to enter a plea.
