Renée Rapp condemns ICE and Donald Trump at Portland concert
Renée Rapp delivered an empowering speech against ICE and Donald Trump at her recent show in Portland.
Portland has been the site of violent conflict between anti-ICE protesters and police outside of a local ICE facility, experiencing more than 100 consecutive nights of disorder from protestors. Protests have allegedly escalated from chants and signs to bottle rockets and barricades to block vehicle access.
The Mean Girls: The Musical singer performed in Portland on October 13th. She began her short speech, “We are very, very, very excited to be here with you. You’re wonderful. And it just happens that we’re here at the same time some people who shouldn’t fucking be here are.”
Rapp continued, “So let’s just fucking make it abundantly fucking clear. Fuck ICE, fuck this administration, and fuck Trump. Let’s get that out of the way very quickly.”
She finished, somewhat ironically, “You are very gracious hosts. Thank you for having us.”
Rapp joins a huge list of musicians who are unafraid to use their shows to speak out against Trump, and ICE. Recently, Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has confirmed rumours from a key Trump advisor that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will attend the upcoming Bad Bunny performance at the Super Bowl.
Noem then shared a threat with the American public, stating, “I think people should not be coming to the Super Bowl unless they’re law-abiding Americans who love this country.”
Rapp has also recently spoken out about the value of queer community while the Trump administration uses anti-LBGTQ+ rhetoric.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan, she shared, “Find your community. Whether that community is online and thousands of miles away from you or two towns over or in someone who really lifts you up beyond a way you could do for yourself,” she said. “Your community will do the best it can to keep you safe. This extends so much further past gay and trans people.”
