Remember Monday confirmed as UK’s Eurovision entry
Basel in Switzerland will play host to the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in May. Now, the UK has confirmed their entry, with the three-piece girl band Remember Monday set to perform.
Having met while in sixth form together, Remember Monday appeared on the television talent competition The Voice UK in 2019, but their rendition of ‘Kiss from a Rose’ saw them eliminated in episode two. Since then, the group has embarked on various nationwide tours, and in 2023, the band members quit their day jobs to focus on Remember Monday full-time.
Speaking about representing their country at Eurovision in Switzerland, the band shared, “When you’re a kid and people ask you what you want to be when you grow up, an absolute classic is ‘I wanna be a pop star’, so the fact that we’re getting the chance to live that dream as three best friends is just wild.”
“We’re going to be the first girl band to represent the UK since 1999, which feels like such a crazy honour,“ they added. It was the short-lived girl group Precious who represented the UK in 1999, with their song ‘Say It’ finishing in 12th place at the event which was held in Jerusalem, Israel.
Alongside the news that Remember Monday will be representing the UK in Basel, it was revealed that their chosen song is entitled ‘What The Hell Just Happened?’. The girl band co-wrote the song with Billen Ted, Thomas Stengaard and Julie ‘Kill J’ Aagaard.
Previously, the Billen Ted duo have worked with the likes of Little Mix and Anne Marie, among others, while Stengaard is famed for having written ‘Only Teardrops’, which was a Eurovision-winning song for Denmark in 2013.
The UK has a complicated relationship with Eurovision, having not won the competition since 1997, when Katrina and the Waves came out on top with their track ‘Love Shine A Light’. Whether Remember Monday can become the next British entry to come out on top remains to be seen, with the final set to take place on May 17th, 2025, in Basel, Switzerland.
