A remake of ‘The Bodyguard’ is on the slate at Warner Bros

The list of movies that can be deemed safe from a remake or reboot grows shorter by the year, and Hollywood has been trying to cross The Bodyguard off it for a while. At last, it looks like Warner Bros will finally be able to get a new spin on the 1992 favourite into production.

Plans to slap a fresh coat of paint on Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston’s box office smash were first revealed back in September 2021 when playwright and filmmaker Matthew López was tasked to write a screenplay, but that’s about as far as things got.

However, Warner Bros bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy have confirmed that The Bodyguard V2.0 is back on the docket with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour director Sam Wrench at the helm, working from a script penned by Jonathan Abrams, who most recently wrote Clint Eastwood’s Juror No 2.

The original Bodyguard may have been nominated for seven Razzies, including ‘Worst Picture’, ‘Worst Director’, ‘Worst Actor’, and ‘Worst Actress’, but it was the second highest-grossing release of 1992 behind only Disney’s animated classic, Aladdin, and spawned the bestselling motion picture soundtrack of all time.

Houston’s cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ seared the film into the cultural consciousness and helped propel her career to new heights on two fronts, and the production ignited a decades-long friendship between the singer and Costner, who gave the eulogy at her funeral in February 2012.

No casting has been shared as of yet, but there’s inevitably going to be one question on everyone’s lips. Will the person who ends up playing the Rachel Marron role originated by Houston be bold – or brave – enough to put their own twist on ‘I Will Always Love You’, or is it simply too iconic to be replicated?

It appears we will soon find out.
