Reading and Leeds 2024: Watch The Last Dinner Party perform ‘Sinner’
Over the last 12 months, The Last Dinner Party‘s emergence has been one of the biggest stories in British music, and their meteoric rise continued with a rousing rendition of ‘Sinner’ on the Main Stage at Reading Festival on August 24th.
It was only last year that The Last Dinner Party were parked in a similarly mid-afternoon slot on the Festival Republic Stage, but have now graduated to the Main Stage. In all truth, the London group could have been placed even higher on the bill which will surely be the case once the follow-up to Prelude to Ecstasy lands.
While The Last Dinner Party showcased themselves in grand style with a stand-out performance at Glastonbury Festival in June, they’ve largely avoided British festival season, and focussing on international areas.
In recent months, they’ve performed all over mainland Europe at major festivals, before taking an excursion to Japan before heading to Australia and then the United States for a run of headline shows. It’s been non-stop for The Last Dinner Party over the last 12 months, but the crowd’s warm reaction at Reading Festival makes it worthwhile.
As The Last Dinner Party only have one album to their name, the material in their set at Reading Festival largely relied on their chart-topping and Mercury Prize-nominated debut, Prelude to Ecstasy. However, the five-piece did also look ahead to the future by giving fans an opportunity to hear new cuts that are set to feature on their forthcoming record.
Due to their heavy touring schedule, The Last Dinner Party are yet to complete work on their second album, but have confirmed that it’s currently in development. In a conversation with The Guardian, they previously revealed writing began “over a two-week session early in May”, and singer Abigail Morris said of the period, “I think I can speak for everyone: it was the happiest we’ve been in a really long time.”
Following their performances at Reading and Leeds, The Last Dinner Party have a brief gap in their diary which could be used for recording before they take flight on an extensive tour of the United Kingdom and Europe for two months.
The first day of Reading Festival featured a headline performance from Blink-182, who rolled back the years with its pop-punk nostalgia-filled set, followed by sets from Gerry Cinnamon and Two Door Cinema Club. Reading Festival is set to continue on August 25th with UK exclusive festival shows courtesy of Lana Del Rey and Fred Again.
