Glastonbury 2024: Watch The Last Dinner Party deliver powerful political statement
As part of their exultant set on the Other Stage at Glastonbury Festival, The Last Dinner Party made a powerful political statement ahead of the upcoming general election on July 4th. Before the final song ‘Nothing Matters’, vocalist Abigail Morris urged people to have “some fucking empathy,” and stand up for what is right on polling day.
Performing on the Other Stage at 3:45pm, the London band played a mix of songs from their acclaimed debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy, which arrived on February 2nd. The record commenced a significant year for the group, which has seen their prominence rise exponentially as they sit firmly at the forefront of modern British music with their resonant anthems about romance and female empowerment.
Basking in the glory of this chapter and playing to a huge crowd, The Last Dinner Party were on fire throughout and even treated their mass of fans to a new unreleased track, ‘Second Best’, which was received with glee and points to where they might head next creatively. It’s safe to say none of the band’s unique penchant for potent melodies has been lost.
Despite the jubilant music, the set’s highlight was when Morris took a moment to reflect on the upcoming general election and the importance of people power and togetherness in writing the world’s wrongs, of which there are presently many.
“Thank you so much, Glastonbury. Thank you for coming out, thank you for watching us,” she told the audience. “I just wanted to take a quick opportunity, because of how many people are watching us right now, and being on the television, that the elections are happening on the 4th of June (July), I think we all know who we’re voting for, but it doesn’t end with the Tories being kicked out, because it’s a bit of a lesser, yeah, it’s a problem…”
Urging fans present and those watching at home to stand up for what is right, she continued: “So, it really is up to us, the people, to make the change. So keep going to protests, keep signing the petitions that will be debated in government, keepboycotting the right things, we’ve seen it’s worked; Barclays pulled out. It really is, and protect each other; just have some fucking empathy.
“And thank you for coming, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. We’ve been The Last Dinner Party, you’ve been Glastonbury, and just remember, nothing matters,” Morris concluded before the band jumped into breakout single ‘Nothing Matters’.
Headlining Glastonbury tonight are Coldplay, with The Last Dinner Party featuring on a day that boasts the likes of Fat White Family, Mannequin Pussy, Little Simz, and even Hollywood icon Russell Crowe’s ‘Indoor Garden Party’. Far Out is bringing coverage directly from Worthy Farm all weekend.
