Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical – ‘Galaxia Tropical’ album review: An essential dive into Peruvian cumbia
From the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, the musician, producer, and artistic visionary Raúl Llerena Vásquez – Ranil – created some of the greatest cumbia rhythms ever committed to tape, and now, thanks to Analog Africa and their penchant for uncovering these danceable gems, those rhythms have the chance to re-enter the airwaves.
The Skinny: Cumbia is the sound of Latin America, with roots going back to the traditional folk sounds of centuries past, yet save for a select few names, some of the style’s greatest innovators remain virtual unknowns outside of their local area, save for the most dedicated of cumbia obsessives. Luckily for the rest of us, some of those obsessives have seen fit to bring Ranil’s output back into focus, with Analog Africa following up on their 2020 compilation, Ranil Y Su Conjunto Tropical, with an equally infectious collection of long-forgotten works from the Peruvian master.
On this newly released 14-track record, the extent of Ranil’s cumbia genius is laid beautifully bare. From his roots in Iquitos, the songwriter employed a constantly revolving cast of musicians to carry out his vision, blending the age-old rhythms of his Amazonian surroundings with the cumbia that first emerged from neighbouring Colombia.
Although the recordings included on this LP, many of them originally dating from the 1970s, do not boast the same bombastic brass or overly aggrandising production style of countless other cumbia releases of that era, their stripped-back, almost lo-fi sound only adds to their appeal.
These recordings command movement, but they also share a decent amount in common with Latin folk, perfectly toeing the line between cumbia euphoria and emotive folk rhythms.
Given that, originally, the vast majority of these tracks were released on impossibly obscure LPs, often in miniscule numbers, mislabelled and underpromoted, struggling to reach any audience outside of Iquitos, having a collection as in-depth and all-encompassing as Galaxia Tropical is nothing short of essential, both in preserving Ranil’s incredible output as well as introducing the sounds of Peruvian cumbia to new generations of listeners.
The Verdict: With Galaxia Tropical, Analog Africa offers one of perhaps the most important collections of Peruvian cumbia since, well, their last Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical compilation. Both as an artefact of Peru’s cultural heritage and, aside from anything else, as an infectious Latin dance record, it is an inarguably essential release.
