Rachel McAdams on why she turned down a ‘Mean Girls’ reunion
The Canadian actor Rachel McAdams has discussed life as a mother and revealed why she turned down a potential Mean Girls reunion.
Over the past few years, McAdams has become a proud mother of two. Hence, while shooting her latest movie, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, she had her five-month-old daughter and two-year-old son on set with her.
“We had a really amazing mom-positive set,” she told Variety. “Everyone understood me having to send breast milk down the road in a van all day long.”
Despite managing to juggle her newfound motherhood with an active career, McAdams admitted to feeling pangs of “mom guilt” from time to time. However, whenever possible, she likes to spend quality time with her children.
McAdams recalled initial conversations surrounding the sexiness of her character in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. “We had a lot of conversations about making our film relatable and klutzy at times,” she said. “I had Judy [Bloom] on one hand saying, ‘I think she should be sexy. Why can’t moms be super sexy?’ And on the other hand, Kelly [Fremon Craig] asking me, ‘Do you think you’re a super sexy mom?’”
“I was like, ‘No, do you feel like a super sexy mom?’” McAdams recalled responding to the movie’s co-writer. “And she said, ‘No, but we are. We just don’t feel like it.’ It was finding the middle ground where we can be all these things, and there’s honesty in that.”
In 2004, McAdams co-starred in the classic teen comedy movie Mean Girls. In January, Tina Fey and Tim Meadows are set to reprise their roles in a Broadway musical adaptation of the movie, but sadly, McAdams won’t be involved.
“Tina and I sort of dabbled with a few ideas, but it was tough to make it all work in the end,” McAdams explained. “I was really down for whatever she wanted to do. I think the direction will be fantastic, and I cannot wait to see it.”
Back in November, a Black Friday Walmart advert saw original Mean Girls cast members Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert reunite. McAdams also missed out on this reunion.
“I don’t know; I guess I wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest,” McAdams said of her absence. “A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag. Also…I didn’t know that everyone was doing it. I would, of course, always love to be part of a ‘Mean Girls’ reunion and hang with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later.”
