Queens of the Stone Age announce new film, ‘Alive in the Catacombs’

Queens of the Stone Age have announced they are set to release a feature film Alive in the Catacombs, which was shot last year.

The band announced the news on Instagram on May 13th, posting an eerie trailer that shows them performing deep inside a catacomb.

The caption for the post said: “This utterly unique once in a lifetime experience features a carefully selected setlist spanning the QOTSA catalogue, each song chosen and epically reimagined for the Catacombs. The result is an unprecedented incarnation of QOTSA at their most intimate, yet surrounded by literally millions of human remains.”

Filmed in July 2024, the band descended into the catacombs of Paris, flanked by a camera crew, to film a special concert experience, 200 miles below street level.

Frontman Josh Homme noted that by playing surrounded by the vastness of human remains was “the biggest audience we’ve ever played for,” adding, “If you’re ever going to be haunted, surrounded by several million dead people is the place. I’ve never felt so welcome in my life.”

The announcement for the special filmed concert explains that Queens of the Stone Age fine-tuned their setlist to suit the unique sonics of the environment, encompassing all “the acoustics and ambient sounds — dripping water, echoes and natural resonance — to the darkly atmospheric lighting tones that enhance the music.”

Alive in the Catacombs comes as the band’s first project since the release of their last album In Times New Roman in 2023. It also marks a return to performing for Queens of the Stone Age, as a string of live dates were cancelled or postponed from last year due to Homme requiring “essential medical care.” They are set to tour this summer.

Alive in the Catacombs will be released via the band’s website on June 5th, but fans can pre-order now to gain access to special behind-the-scenes content.
