The estate of Prince has released yet another rare recording in the shape of ‘I Need a Man’.
While a stream of unheard recordings have been released in recent weeks, Prince’s estate has already made it common knowledge that an extending reissue of The new Sign O’ The Times is on the way.
“The new Sign O’ The Times expanded reissue will be available September 25 via all physical, digital and streaming partners, with the classic album remastered for the first time,” Prince’s estate previously said. “The Super Deluxe edition features 63 previously unreleased tracks and a 2+ hour concert video.”
The song, which was recorded at the Washington Avenue Warehouse on Jan. 22, 1987, arrived complete not long before his Paisley Park Studios would be finished. According to a report in Spin, ‘I Need a Man’ was actually one of a selection fo songs that Prince had originally offered to American blues singer Bonnie Raitt.
The song, which has been whispered around Prince’s strongest fanbase for years, is said to have been originally written for female vocal trio Vanity 6 and offers something in the way of an explanation for the song title. With the track struggling to find a home, Prince would again return to rework the number on 31 May 1988, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
For now though, get a load of the track below.
