Pixies announce new album ‘The Night The Zombies Came’

Alternative rockers Pixies have announced their tenth studio album, The Night The Zombies Came, which is due for release later this year via BMG.

The Night The Zombies Came will mark Pixies’ first full-length release since 2022’s Doggerel, which Far Out suggested offered a “testament to the band’s self-awareness and undoubted musical skill.”

The album will also mark their first since bassist Paz Lenchantin left the band earlier this year. Pixies have brought in newcomer Emma Richardson to take on the instrument for the record. Recording sessions saw them return to the studio with Tom Dalgety, who has been their producer since 2015.

The new LP promises to see the band pulling from new peculiar styles and themes, including druidism, gargoyles, and the drumming of Fleetwood Mac in their heyday. “Fragments that are related and juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs,” Black Francis surmised, “And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP, you end up making a kind of movie.”

The record will include Pixies’ most recent single, ‘You’re So Impatient’, which was unveiled last month. Alongside the announcement of the album, Pixies have released a second single titled ‘Chicken’.

The characteristically dark track finds Black Francis comparing himself to a chicken, declaring, “Sometimes I feel like a chicken, pecking my way through the trees, then something aloft cuts my head right off, now I’m dealing with decapitation.” Euphoric guitars swarm around his violent words.

The Night The Zombies Came is set for release on October 25th, 2024, both digitally and physically. Exclusive coloured copies of the LP will be available from HMV, record stores and the Pixies store. Record stores will stock a transparent and red vinyl, while the official shop will offer a transparent and violet colourway.

Ahead of the release of their tenth record, Pixies have plans to head out on the road this summer. The band will play across Europe this August, including a show at Halfax’s Piece Hall, with a number of festival slots peppered into their schedule.

They are set to play at All Points East in London on August 25th, alongside LCD Soundsystem, Jai Paul and Floating Points. On the following day, they will take to the stage at Victorious Festival in Portsmouth. The lineup also includes Jamie T, Courteeners, and Sugababes.

The Night The Zombies Came is out on October 25th and is now available to pre-order. ‘Chicken’ is out now.
