Phoebe Bridgers returns to Jimmy Fallon for acoustic rendition of ‘Lost Boys’
Phoebe Bridgers surprised fans for the second time on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, following her first performance with a stripped-back, acoustic version of her new track ‘Lost Boys’.
The singer-songwriter returned to New York City’s Rockefeller Center 24 hours after her first performance, which made her Fallon’s first-ever surprise guest.
This time, she swapped out her backing band, made previously of nine children from the ages of eight to 14, with a considerably older band of veteran musicians.
The acoustic version of the song, which charts alienation, nostalgia, and the strange pains of growing older, is now available on all streaming platforms.
Stripped down to its core components, the new track took on a more melancholic air, as Bridger’s gentle voice highlights the confessional nature of lyrical admissions like, “You told me you wish you were dead, but I don’t believe that.”
The first recorded version of the single is a star-studded affair, including her Boy Genius bandmates Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Caroline Shaw on vocals, Alex G on drums and voice memo, Jack Antonoff on electric guitar, synths, drums, and vocoder, Bright Eyes’ Nate Walcott on the trumpet, Chris Thile on mandolin, and Christian Lee Hutson on acoustic guitar.
Both disparate versions of the new single mark the only look we have so far at Lost Weekend, suggesting that the record will contain both crushing moments of clarity and whimsical elements of joy and excess.
The track is her first release since the 2022 single ‘Sidelines’, and is taken from the first full-length since the critically acclaimed 2020 album, Punisher.
In support of the forthcoming August 14th release, Bridgers will be heading out on a tour that will include arena shows in the UK, US, and Europe. Importantly, each performance will be entirely device-free.
