Phoebe Bridgers marks another legal victory over studio owner who sued her for defamation

Four years ago, Chris Nelson, owner of a Los Angeles recording studio, unsuccessfully sued Phoebe Bridgers for defamation. Now, the judge has ordered that Nelson pay her more attorneys’ fees.

Nelson originally sued Bridgers and his ex-girlfriend. He demanded $3.8 million from the singer-songwriter, after she made a social post accusing him of “grooming, stealing, [and] violence.” A year later, Nelson lost the case.

In 2023, Bridgers was previously awarded $496,600 in attorneys’ fees and costs. On July 23rd of this year, she was awarded a further $392,070 for fees and costs regarding the pre-judgment litigation, including her dismissal motion. This extra compensation came as Nelson appealed the ruling and lost once more, making her doubly entitled to compensation.

However, according to Bridgers’ attorneys’ court papers, Nelson hasn’t yet paid her any of the money he owes her, which is now close to one million dollars.

In other Bridgers news, the musician was recently spotted in costume on the set of Primetime, the debut feature film from Lance Oppenheim, who is known for the HBO series Ren Faire. Primetime is an A24 production, also starring Robert Pattinson as a journalist who “takes on an underworld of crime and ends up changing television forever.”

Bridgers has not released solo music since Punisher in 2020, and there are currently no updates on her next musical endeavour. However, it seems that many singers are turning towards a career path in Hollywood.

In a glowing four-star review of her last solo album, Far Out wrote, “Punisher shows that despite having written songs since the age of eleven we’ve only just scratched the surface of who Bridgers truly is, and perhaps more excitingly, the talent she possesses.”
