Pentagon slams Netflix’s gay military series for “ideological agenda”
The Pentagon has lashed out at Netflix for its latest release, deeming the gay military drama, Boots, “woke garbage”.
The show is based on Greg Cope White’s 2015 memoir, The Pink Marine. It follows a closeted teenager in the 1990s, who follows his friend blindly to join the United States Marine Corps after he finishes high school.
The Pentagon was not best pleased with the series. Sharing a statement with Entertainment Weekly, Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson wrote, “Under President Trump and Secretary Pete Hegseth, the US military is getting back to restoring the warrior ethos. Our standards across the board are elite, uniform, and sex neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight.”
He added, “We will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix, whose leadership consistently produces and feeds woke garbage to their audience and children.”
Despite this slander, the show is enjoying much critical success. It is currently the sixth-most-watched show globally on the platform. Miles Heizer, the gay actor who plays the lead role in Boots, opened up about the importance of the project, sharing, “When the show started filming [in 2023], I don’t think we intended to have this message that’s so relevant to serving today.”
He went on to add, “But then of course as we’re making it, all these things started happening. It’s very interesting that Boots shines a light on what’s actually happening now, even though the show is set in 1990. It’s upsetting.”
Earlier this month, Elon Musk launched a campaign against Netflix, urging users to boycott after reacting to X members who claimed the streaming platform was promoting transgender propaganda on an animated show. At the time, he supported posts that insisted “This goes way beyond cancelling Netflix This is you fighting back and taking a stand,” as well as “Go woke, Go broke.”
