Pearl Jam cancel more European shows for health reasons
Grunge legends Pearl Jam have announced additional cancellations following the announcement of health issues within the band. The affected tour dates are those upcoming in Europe, in addition to a show cancelled in London last week.
The Eddie Vedder-fronted band was due to perform on Saturday, June 29th, at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, the group were left with no choice but to call it off at the last minute, much to disappointment of those who had made travel and accommodation plans.
Addressing fans on social media, Pearl Jam said that, “regrettably,” the cancellation has been made “due to illness in the band.” They reassured fans that it was “the last thing” they wanted to do, knowing that “so many of you made travel plans based on the tour schedule.”
“There was simply no other option based on our current health and also having to avoid further damage,” they continued. “We couldn’t be more disappointed to not play one of our favourite cities this tour. Despite best efforts, rescheduling was not possible at this time due to existing schedule commitments. We are deeply grateful for your support and sincerely apologise to the incredible Pearl Jam community for the inconvenience and disappointment.”
At the time of this announcement, Pearl Jam hoped to resume the tour across Europe this week. However, the band has now announced further cancellations for their Berlin dates on July 2nd and 3rd. Refunds will be available at the point of purchase.
The band has made another social media announcement confirming a lingering illness within the group. “We are sorry to share that Pearl Jam concerts scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday in Berlin are cancelled,” they stated on X. “Despite everyone’s best efforts, the band has yet to make a full recovery.”
The statement neglects to detail the nature of the illness or those affected by it. It seems to suggest that more than one member is suffering, suggesting that it could be a contagious illness that they expect to pass in due course. However, at present, nothing is confirmed.
The statement continues: “The impacts of this decision are not lost on us. We feel deeply that so many people spend their time, money and emotional energy to get tickets and then to come see the band, and it is heart-wrenching to have to disappoint you. We also appreciate the many people whose hard work goes into making these shows happen.”
As an American group touring Europe, rescheduling will prove difficult, hence the cancellations and refunds. Pearl Jam hopes to return to the cancelled locations when possible in the future, but are yet to make concrete plans. “Please trust we never take these decisions lightly and try to do everything possible to show up for you all,” they concluded. “We wish a reschedule had been possible for this tour leg and hope to come back to Berlin soon.”
